The Radio-to-Submm Spectral Index as a Redshift Indicator

چکیده

We present models of the 1.4 GHz to 350 GHz spectral index, α 1.4 , for starburst galaxies as a function of redshift. The models include a semi-analytic formulation, based on the well quantified radio-to-far infrared correlation for low redshift star forming galaxies, and an empirical formulation, based on the observed spectrum of the starburst galaxies M82 and Arp 220. We compare the models to the observed values of α 1.4 for starburst galaxies at low and high redshift. We find reasonable agreement between the models and the observations, and in particular, that an observed spectral index of α 1.4 ≥ +0.5 indicates that the target source is likely to be at high redshift, z ≥ 1. The evolution of α 1.4 with redshift is mainly due to the very steep rise in the Raleigh-Jeans portion of the thermal dust spectrum shifting into the 350 GHz band with increasing redshift. We also discuss situations where this relationship could be violated. We then apply our models to examine the putative identifications of submm sources in the Hubble Deep Field, and conclude that the submm sources reported by Hughes et al. are likely to be at high redshifts, z ≥ 1.5. Radio-to-FIR Spectral Energy Distribution and Photometric Redshifts for Dusty Starburst Galaxies

As a logical next step in improving the radio-to-submm spectral index as a redshift indicator (Carilli & Yun), we have investigated a technique of using the entire radio-to-FIR spectral energy distribution (SED) for deriving photometric redshifts for dusty starburst galaxies at high redshift. A dusty starburst SED template is developed from theoretical understanding on various emission mechanis...

Constraining the Radio - Submillimetre Redshift Indicator using data from the SCUBA Local Universe Galaxy

Many of the faint submm sources uncovered by deep SCUBA surveys still remain unidentified at most, if not all other wavelengths. The most successful method so far of obtaining accurate positions and hence allowing more secure identifications has been to use centimetre wavelength imaging with the VLA. This has led to a tempting approach for obtaining redshift estimates for this population (Caril...

The Scatter in the Relationship between Redshift and the Radio-to-Submm Spectral Index

We derive the scatter in the relationship between redshift and radio-tosubmm spectral index, α 1.4 , using the observed spectral energy distributions of 17 low redshift star forming galaxies. A mean galaxy model is derived, along with the rms scatter in α 1.4 . The scatter is roughly constant with redshift. Constant rms scatter, combined with the flattening of the mean α 1.4 – z relationship wi...

Radio Constraints on the Identifications and Redshifts of Submm Galaxies

We present radio maps from the Very Large Array (VLA) for 16 sources detected in a sub-millimeter (submm) survey of the distant Universe. Our deep VLA 1.4-GHz maps allow us to identify radio counterparts or place stringent limits (< 20 Jy in the source plane) on the radio flux of the submm sources. We compare the spectral indices of our sources between 850 m and 1.4 GHz to empirical and theoret...
